The rainy season in Japan ("Tsuyu") from May - July is part of rainy season in SE Asia area.

Normal duration is one month to 1.5 month. Kyushu area gets average 500mm which is 25% of the rain of a whole year. Kanto area incl. Tokyo gets 300mm i.e. 20 % of the whole year rain amount.

When not much rain falls in the rainy season or, the rainy season ends quite late, such a year often has too less or too much rain in the summer which causes natural disasters. 

The below is the average duration of rainy season before summer. If you come to Japan around this time of period, you are going to experience many rainy and cloudy days.

Crazy weather these days in Japan. The above is the average but we see the pattern changing drastically in the recent Japan (by the time of this article in 2019). 2018 saw the rainy season before summer was very short and the summer started one month before the average.

Rainy season is not bad. The biggest advantage of visiting Japan during the rainy season is that you can enjoy less crowded and the cheaper flight/accommodation in Japan. 

It is Not everyday cloudy and rainy. You sometimes see the sun shine. The summer in Japan is so hot and not bearable often. In the rainy season, the temperature is not too bad yet high humidity.
