Snake and Reptile cafes in Tokyo, Osaka etc. - how to get there and how much?

We featured several unique cafes/shops/hotels in Japan. Full list of major owl cafes in Japan, robot hotels, penguin bars, strange curry shop.
There are cat islands, rabbit island, shark island but no snake island in Japan. Virtually some parts of Okinawa islands have many (quite dangerous) snakes on the ground and under water. But still not full of snakes. Onegai kaeru team was in Okinawa several times but we have not seen any yet.
Let us put aside the question if you dare to go, even if there is one.

If you plan to live in Japan and want to keep some pets, we have some more useful info.
Japan has a long history of pet ownership, with animals playing significant roles in people’s lives. The most common pets in Japanese households are dogs and cats, followed by fish and reptiles. A recent survey conducted by LINE Research found that approximately 30% of people in Japan own pets, with the majority choosing dogs and cats. Fish, reptiles, and small mammals follow in popularity. The remaining 70% of respondents do not own pets, with younger generations being less likely to keep animals at home.
THE BENEFITS OF PET OWNERSHIP
Pet owners in Japan report numerous benefits from keeping animals. According to surveys, the most common advantages include:
Receiving emotional support and feeling happier.
Experiencing more peaceful and calming moments in daily life.
Strengthening family communication.
Finding everyday life more enjoyable and meaningful.
Learning about the importance of life and responsibility.
Interestingly, different age groups prioritize different benefits. Younger people tend to enjoy taking pictures and videos of their pets, while older individuals appreciate the companionship and physical activity that comes with pet ownership.
KEEPING REPTILES AS PETS IN JAPAN
In recent years, reptiles have gained popularity as pets in Japan. Many pet owners appreciate reptiles for their unique appearance, ease of maintenance, and quiet nature. Unlike dogs and cats, reptiles do not require daily walks, and they make minimal noise, making them suitable for people living in apartments.
POPULAR REPTILE PETS IN JAPAN
Some of the most popular reptile pets in Japan include:

Gentle and easy to handle.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN KEEPING REPTILES IN JAPAN
Although reptiles can be rewarding pets, they require specific care and attention. Here are some key factors to consider:
1. ENVIRONMENTAL NEEDS
Reptiles need carefully controlled temperatures and humidity levels. Owners must provide appropriate heating, UV lighting, and a suitable enclosure to ensure their pets remain healthy.
2. LONG LIFESPAN
Some reptiles, such as tortoises and pythons, can live for decades. It is essential to consider the long-term commitment before acquiring a reptile as a pet.
3. FEEDING REQUIREMENTS
Many reptiles require live food, such as crickets or mice, which may not be suitable for everyone. Some species can adapt to formulated diets, but proper nutrition is critical.
4. ESCAPE PREVENTION
Reptiles, particularly snakes and lizards, are known for their ability to escape from enclosures. A secure tank or terrarium with proper locking mechanisms is necessary to prevent escapes.
5. LEGAL RESTRICTIONS AND TRANSPORTATION ISSUES
In Japan, animal welfare laws regulate the ownership and transportation of pets. Recently, Japan Post announced that it would stop accepting birds and reptiles for delivery via "Yu-Pack" and other postal services as of March 31, 2025. This decision was made to align with animal welfare regulations. Reptile owners must now find alternative transportation methods when relocating their pets.
Pet ownership in Japan is a cherished experience, with dogs and cats being the most popular choices. However, reptiles have become increasingly popular due to their low-maintenance nature and unique appearance. Prospective reptile owners must carefully consider environmental conditions, lifespan, diet, and legal restrictions before bringing a reptile into their home. With proper care and attention, reptiles can make fascinating and rewarding pets for those willing to meet their specific needs.
If you have chance to be in Japan and if you love snakes and reptiles, you can visit one of these snake cafe.
