Some time passed after our article on "How to Get Aogashima and Where to Stay"and "the interesting island list of Japan". Till now huge amount of requests for us to feature Hachijojima island, with this article, Onegai Kaeru team would like to introduce how to get Hachijojima and where to stay.

If you are into nature diving and hiking, it is your destination. It is only 1 hour flight (from Haneda airport) and just over 10 hour cruise from Tokyo if you prefer slow and relaxing travel. 

You will see so many type of tropical fishes and turtles which you may only expect from Okinawa area (south west tropical islands in Japan). The island is volcanic which means there are plenty of hot springs ("onsen").   

Yet, Sokodo kaisuiyokujo (Sokodo beach / 底土海水浴場) is the big (artificial)sand beach on the island,  basically all other area like Yokoma beach (横間海水浴場) are rocky around the seashore. The island has very beautiful nature and great spot for scuba diving. But the island is not for sand beach. Many expected the fine sand beach and get disappointed.

Note esp. if you are travelling with kids or you are not good swimmer: The current is fast around the island thus need to be very careful not to be washed away.

It is part of Tokyo but totally different from the common image of "Tokyo" full of tall buildings (similar to the shock to many when learning Okutama area is also part of Tokyo). Hachijojima is like Hawaii.

The island consists of two volcanoes called Mt. Hachijo-fuji (854m, the tallest mountain on the island) and Mt. Mihara(758m). You can do hiking. The hiking road is not paved. You need a good hiking gear. And the weather can change suddenly.

You wear swim suits and it is a mixed bath. The great thing about this hot spring is it is FREE! There is only one change room. It may be a good idea to change in a car if you rent one.

Dried fermented fish. It is quite stinky so be careful when you grill it at home!

It is around one hour flight from Haneda airport (the one close to the city, not Narita airport. One hour is a pure flight. You need to take account of the travel time to get Haneda from your stay into account.) in Tokyo or around 11 hour cruise from Takeshiba Sanbashi bay in Tokyo to Hachijojima.

It is the yellow, brown and black textile dyed by the traditional method from Hachijojima island. This method uses local plants and black muddy water which contains iron.

Kihachijo kimono was the island's local production presented to the Tokugawa central government in Edo period.
